Last month, the United Nations formally announced that it would not be paying any compensation for a cholera epidemic in Haiti that was caused by its own peacekeepers.
The peacekeepers were supposed to help victims of the 2010 earthquake, but according to the UN’s special envoy for Haiti, former US President Bill Clinton, instead they introduced the outbreak, which has killed more than 8,000 people so far.
In the days following the earthquake, we suggested the arrival of US and other international agencies signalled a defining moment in the history of a country that had battled for centuries to remain free from western influence.
Sadly, this is very true and now the UN is hiding behind diplomatic immunity to avoid rectifying the damage it has caused.
