According to digital strategist Nic Newman, 29 million people in the UK use Facebook every week, and 20% of our internet time is spent on social networks.
Moreover, the former head of future media at the BBC says that in addition to links from search engines, referrals from Facebook to mainstream news websites have increased 500% since 2008, and the trend shows no sign of slowing.
In the fascinating video below, Newman reveals how in Britain, Twitter, which he claims is driven by a network of 150,000 propagandists, is used to influence and control the TV news.
