An English villain who is on the run for murder paid a police detective £2,000-a-week in bribes, Newcastle Crown Court heard yesterday.
Detective Constable John Jones made friends with career criminal Allan Foster and accessed the Northumbria Police intelligence computer on numerous occasions to find out what fellow officers knew about the gangster.
According to prosecutor Toby Hedworth QC, on one occasion, Jones travelled with Foster to London’s West End, where they snorted cocaine and hired call-girls, the jury heard.
Mr Hedworth claimed an associate of Foster would give evidence to confirm that Jones collected £2,000 in cash every week from the criminal.
He said: ‘What, you may ask yourself, was this Northumbria Police officer doing to be rewarded in such a way by a man who he will have known to be an active professional, criminal?’
The 48-year-old detective denies three counts of public misconduct.
