As Nato prepares to take over the battle to stop Colonel Gaddafi attacking his own people, new reports suggest Britain is responsible for supplying him with the weapons he’s using.
According to documents obtained by the Campaign Against the Arms Trade, between 2000 and 2009, the UK was the world’s second biggest arms supplier; exporting around £58bn worth of weapons.
In 2005 alone, the UK licensed the sale of armoured vehicles, ‘bombing computers’ and over £70m worth of battlefield weapons and ‘military transport aircraft’ to Gaddafi.
Orders for British arms exports have increased by almost 70% over the past four years, but even more staggering is the revelation that between July and September 2010, the Foreign Office sold £6m of ammunition and what is described as ‘spacecraft’ to Libya.
In the video below (recorded last month), campaigners and lobbyists discuss the hypocrisy of western governments and their arms deals with repressive Arab nations.
