Facebook users with a large number of friends are more likely to suffer stress and neurosis, a new study has found.
Researchers at Edinburgh Napier University questioned 175 students about how they used Facebook and found that 63% avoided new friend requests, and those with larger audiences were often left in a state of ‘neurotic limbo’.
According to study leader Dr Kathy Charles, although most users believe Facebook offers few real benefits, they are afraid to stop engaging with freinds.
She said: ‘Like gambling, Facebook keeps users in a neurotic limbo, not knowing whether they should hang on in there just in case they miss out on something good.’
