Marta on Target for FIFA World Player of the Year 2010
03:40 - Tuesday 07 December 2010 - In Categories Sport, World VideosOverground is tipping Brazil’s Marta da Silva to win the FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year prize for the fifth time.
The 28-year-old forward is likely to collect the FIFA Ballon d’Or award, which merges the FIFA World Player of the Year and the Ballon d’Or – formerly known as the European Footballer of the Year – at a ceremony in Switzerland next month.
Marta, as she is known, has won the Player of the Year award – voted for by journalists and international team coaches and captains – every year since 2006.
She is hugely talented and currently unsigned so expect a Marta media frenzy over the next few months, especially if she wins the title for the fifth consecutive year – remember where you heard it first.
Andres Iniesta and Xavier Creus (members of Spain’s World Cup 2010 winning side), have been shortlisted for the mens’ award, but Barcelona FC teammate Lionel Messi is expected to take the prize.
