1990 Flashback: Ice Ice Baby
01:37 - Thursday 02 December 2010 - In Categories UK Entertainment, Memory Bank
Exactly 20 years ago, Texas rapper Vanilla Ice simultaneously topped the UK and US charts with Ice Ice Baby.
The song was an instant hit and became the first hip-hop single to top the Billboard charts.
Although Ice introduced the genre to new territories in Europe and America’s mid-south, the hip-hop community largely mocked his music and the mainstream media derided him as a gimmick.
20 years later and little has changed. In January, Ice’s cheesy collaboration with X Factor rejects Jedward reached number two in the UK after topping the Irish chart.
