A groundbreaking sophomore LP, One In A Million, followed two years later and launched the careers of Missy Elliott and Timbaland.
Besides her thriving music career, Aaliyah modelled for Tommy Hilfiger and starred in films such as Romeo Must Die alongside Jet Li.
After a five-year hiatus, she returned to the music scene with a self-titled third album, which spawned the chart-topping singles I Miss You and Try Again.
On 25 August 2001, Aaliyah and her entourage were tragically killed in a plane crash in the Bahamas, where she was shooting the video for the single Rock the Boat. She was 22 years old.
