Anton Ferdinand Embarrassed By Freak Goal

Sunderland defender Anton Ferdinand confessed that he was embarrassed by the manner in which Arsenal scored their opening goal on Saturday, writes Julian Mitchell.

Ferdinand delayed a simple, defensive clearance before his effort hit the foot of Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas and looped over the Sunderland goalkeeper from 40 yards out.

The player’s blushes were somewhat spared when England striker Darren Bent earned Sunderland a 1-1 draw after equalising with the last kick of the game in the 95th minute.

‘It was one of those moments when you want the ground to swallow you up, it was that embarrassing,’ he said.

‘I should have got on the ball quicker. It was a freak goal. I had to make sure it didn’t affect my game.’
