Immigrants to be Pushed to Back of Housing Queue, Says Housing Minister
13:54 - Tuesday 31 August 2010 - In Category UK News
Hard-working British people are to be given priority for council houses over immigrants and benefit cheats, according to housing minister Grant Shapps.
Previously, council houses were given to families based on their circumstances.
But Shapps says new rules will allow give preference to people who have lived in an area for a long time and have family connections.
He said: ‘It causes a great deal of concern and is very problematic for social cohesion when people who have lived in the area for a long time don’t get any preference.
‘I don’t care where somebody is from, the key is what you put into society,’ he added.
