'Controversial' Comedy Citizen Khan Returns to BBC20:55 - Friday 18 October 2013 - In Categories
Family sitcom Citizen Khan is back on our screens, writes Rena Dipti Annobil
Season one earned mixed reviews and received 700 complaints that the show stereotyped muslims and was ‘disrespectful to the Koran’.
The show was created by, and stars, Adil Ray who presented the award-winning Adil Ray Show on BBC Asian Network for several years. The writing team is made up of Anil Gupta and Richard Pinto (The Kumars at No. 42 and Goodness Gracious Me).
From what I’ve seen, season two is much better than the first series and even though the comedy is quite gentle and feels a little bit dated, it does what it says on the tin… It’s a family comedy you can actually watch it with your family (which is rare these days)!
Mr Khan is a loveable character and it’s great to see more Asian characters on TV, particularly muslims, a community who aren’t usually seen to make fun of themselves.
Citizen Khan is on BBC One on Fridays at 9.30pm. Catch up on iPlayer here
