Has The Bubble Burst for the UK Urban Music Scene?19:47 - Friday 09 August 2013 - In Category UK Entertainment
During my many years as an entertainment journalist and broadcaster, I spent much of my time trying to warn upcoming artists about the perils of the British music industry, writes Overground editor Akosua Annobil.
I’d harp on about how important it was to be independent and try to convince them of the pending growth of the internet.
A few of them were smart enough to see the bigger picture; others were polite and merely entertained the conversation. But most didn’t really have much foresight and couldn’t resist the lure of being ’signed by a major’.
Fast forward 10 years and along comes this pretty good video (above). I’m not one to say ‘I told you so’ but I can’t help but gasp at how relevant this conversation still is.
Moreover, this footage gives me hope. The new generation will come to understand that the world is theirs; not a major label’s, or anyone else’s for that matter.
