White boys are virtually bottom of the class in British schools, a new study by the Department for School Children and Families (DSCF) has found.

The report, which analysed exam results from each of the UK's 30,000 schools, claims they do worse in their GCSEs than African Caribbean, Chinese, Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi pupils – and girls from any background.

DSCF researchers found changing schools during GCSE years; coming from a deprived area; and speaking a foreign language were the factors that most influenced a child's performance.

The report comes just weeks after teachers in Birmingham claimed that disadvantaged young white boys were in danger of being recruited by right-wing extremist parties.

Former Tory leader and chairman of the Centre for Social Justice Iain Duncan-Smith described the DSCF's findings as 'disastrous'.

He said: 'To prevent the growth of an uneducated and unemployable underclass of forgotten children, we have to get parents to engage in their schooling from an early age.'

Nick Seaton, chairman of the Campaign for Real Education, added: 'Chinese and Indian youngsters do well because they are pushed by their parents and have supportive families, but many white British males don't have this.'
